Gion Hatanaka Maiko Evening , Kyoto, Japan
Everyone who visits Kyoto hopes to catch a glimpse of a Maiko shuffling along the quiet laneways of Gion towards her next appointment, only to quickly disappear around a corner or into the entrance of a nondescript teahouse. However, such a sighting is a rare occurrence and one that you may not have the pleasure of experiencing, but fortunately there are alternative ways to get up close and personal with a Maiko that will make your Kyoto visit even more special.
The Gion Hatanaka is a ryokan nestled at the base of Higashiyama adjacent to the Yasaka Jinja shrine complex and is owned and operated by the Hatanaka family.
The Kyoto Cuisine and Maiko evening held at the Gion Hatanaka allows guests to enjoy a traditional Kyoto kaiseki-style meal while being entertained by a small group of authentic Maiko.
The meal was served a series of small course with the presentation being every bit as important as the taste.
Throughout the dinner the Maiko performed a traditional dance, along with singing accompanied by one of the Maiko on the shamisen.
There was even the opportunity to converse with the Maiko as they circulated the room, stopping at each table to allow guests to take photos and ask questions (with the help of an interpreter).
Towards the end of the even some guests were invited to challenge the Maiko to some traditional drinking games, which the Maiko had a habit of winning.
This is the second time I have attended the Maiko evening at the Gion Hatanaka and I don’t feel that I would ever grow tired of the experience.
